The German uniting and competition in the electricity market has resulted in a clear drop in the number of employees in the country's electricity sector. Through rationalisation and restructuring of business areas, the number of employees in the sector fell by 25% to 164,000 from 1991 to 1998, according to figures from the German association of electricity utilities, VDEW.
